What an awful book. Dont get me wrong, the premise is good. Elite adventurer who has lost his memories and is trying to find himself in a post-adventurer life. Great stuff right? Wrong. He is the most powerful ranked hero around, and his girlfriend is much much more powerful then him, and yet she is completely useless, always. She does nothing to help any situation, and all her magic spells are moronically named like "super duper long-legged walky spell" or some equally stupid thing. The country he lives in has been taken over by great evil and many of the heros are in on it, and yet Sven and his friends refuse to kill...anyone. At one point he is being attacked by an army, and he is smacking people with the flat of his blade. Seriously, get real, or quit writing this series cause it felt like a gigantic joke. It is tempting to describe this author's writing style as "mature" but with the connotations that word carries in current society, it would leave the wrong impressions. These stories are refreshing to me as an older mature/adult fantasy reader. The vast majority of new fantasy / sci-fi works these days cater to a very adolescent or fantastically fantastic taste of fantasy. This story does not do that. The author offers characters that have the feel of having depth in substance, even without extensive background or character development explored within the stories. They don't seem to get lost in archetypes, tropes, and cliches, or obvious fan service. They take a much more mature and adult approach to telling a story that isn't all pursuit of adolescent intoxication fantasies and wet dreams of empowerment. The writer obviously cares a great deal about how they tell the story and what they convey. They are rough around the edges, like any new or part-time author, but they avoid many of the pitfalls that I see similar authors make. There was only one instance in this book where I scene felt off, forced, or inexplicable to me, and that was the funeral scene. So far, both installments in this series have been very gratifying to read, and I look forward to the next volume of this series. There are no new or original stories, just new perspectives that they are told from. This author manages to share a pleasant and uncommon perspective.
