Ebook About A history of the American Constitution's formative decades from a preeminent legal scholarWhen the US Constitution won popular approval in 1788, it was the culmination of thirty years of passionate argument over the nature of government. But ratification hardly ended the conversation. For the next half century, ordinary Americans and statesmen alike continued to wrestle with weighty questions in the halls of government and in the pages of newspapers. Should the nation's borders be expanded? Should America allow slavery to spread westward? What rights should Indian nations hold? What was the proper role of the judicial branch? In The Words that Made Us, Akhil Reed Amar unites history and law in a vivid narrative of the biggest constitutional questions early Americans confronted, and he expertly assesses the answers they offered. His account of the document's origins and consolidation is a guide for anyone seeking to properly understand America's Constitution today.Book The Words That Made Us: America's Constitutional Conversation, 1760-1840 Review :
The book showed up promptly and in perfect condition. As I opened the package I was astonished at the size of the book. Akhil has accomplished a piece of work to be proud of. I have found no other book as comprehensive on the Constitution and it’s history than this. Not only does Akhil dive into the historical narrative surrounding the events of the founding and Constitution, but Akhil does a beautiful job of navigating readers through dense and complicated legal history and text in a very simple and understandable way — even to the novice who may not be as familiar to legal texts as lawyers or trained historians. To be completely transparent, the book is a real page turner and I did not put it down when I first picked it up. It’s a beautiful piece of work and I am eager to receive the other two volumes of work Akhil has told us is on the way. Congratulations Professor Amar! Professor Amar take his readers through the giant events of the day at the time of the United States founding. I would say the books' purpose is to give a panoramic multigenerational account of the constitutional conversation at the founding, with an opinionated gloss that is all too often missing from typical historical accounts. This opinionated gloss is necessary for legal and constitutional considerations which empathize applicability instead of overly intellectual abstractions. The book works to make us comprehend the context of our founding. To grow from its mistakes and celebrate its strengths. Celebrating the blessing of liberty the Constitution provides to us and our posterity is part of passing down the torch to future generations so that they too can venerate the American creeds and understand the perpetual project of E Pluribus Unum. This is the animating telos of The Words That Made Us. It is truly an indispensable work for anyone interested in how America came to be.
