***SPOILERS INCLUDED***I don't know how Hartnady continues to write such good characters and fresh stories, I'm just grateful that she does. The drama of chapter one hooked me immediately. I couldn't read fast enough to get answers! Hope just jumped off the page as so likeable and undeserving of what she was dealing with. I was instantly on Team Hope and developed a bit of a girl crush (she's just so adorable!)Hope reacted how I imagine I would the first time meeting a shifter. Staring, stuttering, rambling, being embarrassed, slightly awkward. Although I'd probably stare more! Hot naked guys? Yes please. Reece was very much giving off "humans are strange and weird creatures" vibes. I always like how Hartnady writes her supernatural beings inner thoughts about humans. I loved the back and forth banter between Reece and Hope. Their sexual tension is so obvious I couldn't believe they weren't acknowledging it. And Locke is a hilarious pain in Reece's butt while being an entertaining and sweet friend to Hope.Also, OMG I love the internal rambling she does about his erection and throughout the book. It is gold! And the sex scenes....whew, they were *chef's kiss* smoking hot! Seriously I want to sign up for testing compatibility!Overall, I totally enjoyed this book. I always seem to have such a good time whenever I dive into these worlds Hartnady seemingly effortlessly creates. The only "dark spot" for me was Hope forgiving her sister's betrayal. Cheating is unforgivable for me. PERIOD. The sister, the ex, and her parents (for basically taking the sister's side) were all scumbags in my opinion. I understand that she's family but that didn't matter to her sister when she was screwing Hope's hubby, so family shouldn't have mattered to Hope.*I received a copy for an honest review* Hartnady gets back to what I think is her sweet spot with writing in Hope Awakened. By that I mean, there are a few of her books that miss the mark with either with the characters or the back story, or lack of communication being the only vice keeping them apart, etc. I have read most of her books, but stopped reading the demigod series because of such, and was considering not moving forward with the Feral series. However, I am glad to say that Hope Awakened was a good read and had all of the elements that I have come to appreciate from this author - paranormal shifter fantasy, romance between shifter and humans, quick, light (not too heavy in previous backstory abuse, etc), lots of steamy scenes, and it moved the series along well. Her writing is getting better as well with fewer passive sentences taking you out of the moment.Hope is the new Ob-GYN for the Ferals. She has a six month contract with the job of getting a new human-friendly clinic up and running on Feral territory and to see the new queen through her egg-laying process. The problem is that the crazy brother to the Feral king has designs to steal the new hatchlings and take back the thrown. Thusly, the royals promote the warrior Feral, Reese to not only run security for the queen and hatchlings, but for Hope as well. By-the-book Reese tries to fight his attraction to the curvy human doctor, but finds it increasingly difficult as time goes by, and her contract deadline nears.
